<p>An apparatus and method for fusing the ends of battery cell terminal posts (20) and the ends of hollow bushings (22) fixed in the plastic cover (21) of a battery (10) being assembled and within which the terminal posts (20) are concentrically disposed. The apparatus includes a pair of induction heating coils (50) which each concentrically support a mold cavity insert (95) adapted to receive the ends of the terminal posts (20) and bushing (22) to be fused and a ferrite insert (105) adapted to concentrate induced current in the ends of the terminal posts (20) and bushing (22) upon energization of the coils (50). An electrical control (110) is provided for selectively generating a radio-frequency oscillating current in the coils (50) to effect heating, melting, and fusion of the ends of the terminal posts (20) and bushings (22) to consistent fusion depths while the plastic battery case (21) remains substantially uneffected. The control (110) is adapted to substantially instantaneously energize the inductance heating coils (50) to a first power level, maintain such power level for a first predetermined period for melting the ends of the terminals posts (20) and bushing (22) and then gradually decrease the power level in a substantially uniform controlled manner for a second predetermined period to produce finished fused terminals with good surface appearance.</p> |
