The centrifugal compressor comprises a casing (1) of the barrel type, which is fitted along its longitudinal axis with an axial suction connection (2) which is connected, on one side, to a suction chamber (3) and, on the other side, to an overhung impeller (4) mounted on a shaft and communicating with a pressure chamber (7), and is also fitted with a guide device (5) which serves to generate a transport medium stream passing into the impeller (4) and which is disposed at the inlet into the axial suction connection, and also comprises a cover (8) having an intermediate wall (9) with an aerodynamically favourable profile. The cover (8) is fastened to the casing (1). The vanes (14) of the guide device (5), whose longitudinal axes are parallel to the longitudinal axis of the compressor, are rigidly attached to the end face of the axial suction connection (2) and surround an annular slide (16). The slide (16) is arranged coaxially with the guide device (5) and is provided with a means for displacing it along the longitudinal axis of the compressor, and has a length which corresponds to the length of a vane (14) of the guide device (5) and is sufficient to close an axially symmetric ring channel (19). The latter is delimited by the side of the intermediate wall (9) and a cowling ring (20) which is fitted at the end face, facing the intermediate wall (9), of the annular slide (16). <IMAGE>
