Dehydrohalogenation process for producing polyamino compounds.

An improved process for producing a polyamino compound comprises the steps of (A) reacting a diamine with an epihalohydrin in the presence of an alkali metal hydroxide in an amount less than a stoichiometrical amount, (B) adding to the reaction mixture in Step (A) an alkali metal carbonate in an excess amount of Q mols, wherein Q satisfies the formula: 2 x (1-P) </= Q </= 4 x (1 - P) wherein P and Q each represents the moles of the alkali metal hydroxide and the alkali metal carbonate, respectively, (C) separating the reaction mixture obtained in Step (B) into a filtrate and a filter cake containing most of the by-product alkali metal halide and unreacted carbonate, and (D) removing water from the filtrate by distillation and separating the resulting distillation residue into precipitated solid by-products and a polyamino compound in the filtrate. The polyamino product has a low content of halogen and alkali metal impurities.
