As shown the device is a surface charge-coupleddevice comprising a P type silicon substrate 16, silicon dioxide dielectric 18 and aluminium or polysilicon electrodes Vg. The depth of the storage wells is variable being determined by the voltage applied to the storage electrodes Vg 1 <SP>1</SP>, Vg 2 <SP>1</SP> &c.
