In a process for the optical monitoring of at least one flame burning in a furnace plant by means of at least one sensor device which takes pictures, and which senses a flame by its flame parameters, the flame parameters of at least one flame are surveyed and are compared with predetermined ideal parameters. The flame parameters of a group of flames which belong together are surveyed, and the surveyed flame parameters are compared with predetermined ideal flame parameters and if necessary analysed by the comparison of established deviations. When a permissible level of deviations is exceeded, a signal is emitted. In an apparatus for this process, the sensor device has a receiving region which surveys the flames of a burner group, and the signal output is connected to a signal processing circuit to which is connected an evaluation device. The evaluation device is spatially separate from the sensor device.
