An arrangement (27) in the area of each return spring (26) comprises a damping piston (33) and a cylinder (32), which form a damping chamber (34). During the intake stroke (19) fuel flows by way of an inlet orifice (37) and an intake port (41) with a non-return valve (39, 40) from the pump internal chamber (18) into the damping chamber (34). On the delivery stroke (20) the enclosed fuel is compressed and forced by way of a throttle (42) into the pump internal chamber (18); a hydraulic force (43) directed counter to the delivery stroke (20) is thereby produced, as a result of which any lifting of the pump piston (13) from the rollers (16) is prevented or reduced. The object of the arrangement (27) is the correct injection sequence of the fuel injection pump even at high delivery velocities and delivery rates. <IMAGE>
