Substituted (2-amino-2-imidazolin-1-yl)acetic acid derivatives of the general formula I <IMAGE> in which R<1> denotes an optionally substituted aryl or heteroaryl radical, R<2> denotes hydrogen or alkyl, R<3> denotes hydrogen or an optionally substituted aryl radical, are suitable as medicaments, for example for high blood pressure or cardiac arrhythmias and are prepared by cyclising a substituted (2-aminoethylamino)acetic acid compound of the general formula II R<2>O-CO-CH(R<1>)NHCH2CH2NH2 with an isocyanide dichloride of the general formula III R<3>NCCl2 in the presence of a chlorinating agent or with cyanogen bromide or cyanogen chloride.
