All vehicles which pass through an appropriately equipped monitored section are registered at the start and at the end of this section with their registration numbers and the two passing times. The registrations which are recorded electronically/magnetically as an unambiguous sequence of pixels are stored - separately - until an electronic search process has found and processed the two sequences of pixels which are associated, i.e. originate from the same vehicle. For this purpose, the passing-through time is calculated as the difference between the two passing times and from this the average speed is calculated and - if a speed limit has been exceeded - the vehicle registration number and speed are printed out. This result is available for each vehicle shortly after it passes through the monitored section. The monitored section can be several metres to several kilometres long. The vehicles can vary their sequence and lane within the monitored section. All the processes including the printing out of registration numbers and speed occur automatically; manned operation is largely unnecessary. Whether vehicles have driven closer than a compulsory minimum distance apart when passing through a monitored section of, for example, 300 m can also be automatically printed out.
