A handling system for cables or similar string type items involves at least one carrier unit (5), which is movable along a transport track (11), which links, a number of stations (3, 4) for winding/unwinding of items on a rotating core (10) on a carrier unit, or for storage by a carrier unit. A handler (2) can move along the transport track and is connectable to a carrier unit in order to project the carrier unit so attached along the transport track from one station to the next. A position definition resource on the carrier unit defines its position on the track in relation to the handler's position. A steering unit (1) controls the handler's movement from its position on the track to the carrier unit's position, in order to couple the handler to the carrier unit. The handler is moved with its coupled carrier unit to a specific position in a winding station, or unwinding station, in order to start the drive on the carrier unit's core in the winding station, or to brake the core in the unwinding station respectively. The specific position on the track is such that a drive unit is attachable, respective to a brake unit, to the carrier unit's core.<IMAGE> |
