A sewing appliance has a lower plate, on which at least one holding plate and one upper plate are articulated. A gathering plate is attached removably and adjustably to the holding plate. The gathering plate has an upwardly extending gathering part and two clamping portions which can be lowered independently and in succession, in order to come into engagement with a layer of the fabric which is laid over the gathering part, the engagement taking place first on one side and then on the other side of the gathering part, whilst the undesirable distortion of the fabric can be avoided.
