PURPOSE:To easily decompose a chloroformic acid ester produced as a byproduct of a carbonylation reaction in high efficiency by contacting a gas containing a chloroformic acid ester with activated carbon or a metal oxide carrier, thereby decomposing the contained compound into an alkyl chloride. CONSTITUTION:A vapor-phase reaction tube provided with an external jacket, made of glass and having an inner diameter of 13mm and a length of 250mm is filled with 5ml of activated carbon or a metal oxide carrier substance (e.g. activated alumina) and the inner temperature of the reaction layer is maintained to 120 deg.C by circulating a thermal medium through the reaction tube jacket. A gas containing 500vol.ppm of a chloroformic acid ester (e.g. methyl chloroformate) and diluted with nitrogen is supplied through the top of the reaction tube at a space velocity of 400hr<-1> and subjected to catalytic reaction under normal pressure at 120 deg.C for 1hr to effect the decomposition of the chloroformic acid ester into an alkyl chloride. The chloroformic acid ester produced as a by-product of the reaction of carbon monoxide with a nitrous acid ester, etc., is extremely easily decomposed in high efficiency. |
