PURPOSE:To obtain a drawn wire rod of excellent quality by arranging plural wire rod holding clamps provided with lifting units and plural die sensors in the moving direction of a die and releasing the lockings of clamps and retreating them by detecting the approach of the die. CONSTITUTION:In a device of reducing a wire rod by moving a die 10 from the fixed-end side of wire rod to the free-end side; when the die 10 approaches wire- rod holding clamps 19A-19N, sensors 20A-20N detect the approach to retreat the clamps in sequence to the positions locating outside of the moving path of the die 10 by releasing the wire rod from the lockings of clamps. Accordingly the die 10 is moved to travel smoothly without colliding with the clamps 19A- 19N. Further, as the wire rod is fixedly supported during reducing at the plural positions in its longitudinal direction, the wire rod is supported in a straight state and the centers of die 10 and wire rod are surely aligned because the vibrations generating at the time of drawing is prevented; thus a wire rod free from die marks is obtained.
