PURPOSE:To prevent nonuniform cooling of a steel plate without taking tension into consideration by detecting the temp. distribution of the steel plate in the transverse direction thereof on the outlet side of cooling rolls disposed in a continuous annealing furnace and changing the ejecting rate of gas jet on the inlet side of the cooling rolls. CONSTITUTION:Cooling rolls 2 are disposed in a continuous annealing furnace and the temp. distribution of a steel strip in the transverse direction thereof is detected with a thermometer 4 disposed on the outlet side of the rolls 2 in the stage of winding the steel strip on said rolls and cooling the strip. The ejecting rate of the gas jets from gas jet coolers 1 disposed on the outlet side of the rolls 2 is transversely changed according to the temp. distribution. The temp. difference in the transverse direction is suppressed to about 20 deg.C in the stage of cooling the strip from, for example, 650 deg.C to 400 deg.C by the above-mentioned method, by which the steel strip having no uneven material quality in the transverse direction is obtd.
