PURPOSE:To produce the titled substance useful as an intermediate of vitamin E, easily, in high efficiency, by oxidizing 2,4,6-trimethylphenol used as a raw material with hypohalogenous acid in an aqueous medium, and heating the product without separating from the reaction mixture. CONSTITUTION:2,4,6-Trimethylphenol is oxidized with a hypohalogenous acid or its salt in an aqueous medium preferably at 3-13.5pH, especially 7-12.5pH, at 1-50 deg.C, especially <=25 deg.C, and the reaction liquid is heatd as it is at 70-300 deg.C, preferably 100-140 deg.C to obtain the objective compound. The hypohalogenous acid salt is preferably sodium hypochlorite or bleaching powder, and its concentration is usually 0.01-50%, especially 0.2-10%, and 0.8-1.3 times the stoichiometric molar amount based on the raw material.
