PURPOSE:To prevent skew, jam, etc. of a paper sheet and facilitate taking-out of the paper sheet by raising and lowering a hopper plate corresponding to the feeding and discharge of the paper sheet and driving a pick-up roller for transporting the paper sheet, linked with the hopper plate. CONSTITUTION:A paper sheet 17 is loaded onto a hopper plate 1, and then sent into a reading part 14 by a pick-up roller 5 and traveling system rollers 6-13 when the plate 1 is pulled-up by a solenoid 4. While, a detector 15 detects the return of the paper sheet 17 onto the hopper plate 1 on discharge. Further, a detector 16 detects that the paper sheet 17 comes close to the reading part 14 on taking-in and detects the approach of the paper sheet 17 in the direction of hopper plate 1 on discharge. When the paper sheet 17 is taken-in according to the detection signal of the detector 16, the hopper plate is raised by the solenoid 4, and when the paper sheet 17 is discharged, the plate 1 is lowered through a spring 2, and an anticipated purpose can be achieved.
