By granulated straw is meant straw which is finely divided to a consistency such as coarse tobacco. This material is less flammable than chaff and straw in bales. An apparatus is specified for production of granulated straw, which does not get clogged with straw, and whose knives only slide minimally. The apparatus comprises a blower 8, which through an opening 5 sucks in a mixture of straw, arrow H, and air, arrow L, and delivers a mixture of granulated straw and air, exit 20, and comprises rotating knives 3, which are mounted on the blower axle 1 and are surrounded by a screen 4. Disks 2 with the knives 3 are firmly mounted at an incline on the axle 1, and therefore the disks during their movement will produce a transverse motion of air, preventing the space inside the screen 4 from becoming clogged. The tips of the knives 3 are situated near the screen 4 without touching it, so that the wear on the knives is only very little. <IMAGE>
