In this multipole, multiphase synchronous machine (motor or generator) the armature circumference is split into a plurality of different zones (Z1...Zn, n = integer) in order to reduce the winding overhangs, a plurality of juxtaposed coils (S1...Sm, m = integer) of the same winding phase (R, Y, B) being arranged in each zone. The sides of adjacent coils are in each case located in the same slot of the armature laminate stack. There is always a phase angle between the zones. For example, a spatial distance (a) can be provided between the zones, which distance corresponds to the phase angle between the associated winding supports. Alternatively to this, the armature coils of one zone can be connected in series and the pole pitches of the armature winding and the excitation can differ in such a manner that a phase shift occurs within one zone which corresponds to the phase angle between two winding supports. <IMAGE>
