PURPOSE:To provide a water-based coating compsn. contg. (A) cross-linked copolymer latex obtained by emulsion polymerization using a poly-vinyl group- contg. monomer and (B) an inorganic filler and having excellent mechanical stability and water resistance. CONSTITUTION:The coating compsn. contains 50-90wt% by solid in total of (A) a copolymer latex and (B) an inorganic filler, e.g. CaCO3, in an A/B ratio of 1/1-1/10 by solid weight. (A) consists of 0.5-7wt% ethylenically unsatd. carboxylic acid, e.g. (meth)acrylic acid, 0.1-7wt% poly-vinyl group-contg. monomer, e.g. divinylbenzene, and at least one copolymerizable vinyl monomer (e.g. styrene) and has a tetrahydrofuran insol. content of 80wt% or higher. The cmpsn. has excellent mechanical stability even when the inorganic filler is added in a high proportion to a vehicle.
