A user-controlled, self-contained breathing apparatus (10) designed to be light weight and simple in construction for use in normal or emergency situations comprising an oronasal mask (12) defining a breathing chamber (16), a gas supply container (30 or 30') carried by the mask (12) having an outlet valve (72 or 72') with a movable valve control element (64, 64' or 180), an operator (100, 100', 104' and 218) carried by the mask (12) for moving the valve control element (64, 64' or 180) in response to manipulation by the user with his mouth between an open position for supplying breathing gas from the container to the breathing chamber and a closed position and an exhalation valve (148). As a result, inhalation from and exhalation to the breathing chamber (46) is performed by the user through the nose. If desired, a member (190) for manually moving the valve control element (64') may be included on the operator (100'). |
