PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compound useful as an intermediate for a flame- retardant for fibers, organic phosphorous compound for an improver of plastic simply in high yield in high purity, by reacting phenylphosphonothioic dichloride with nitric acid, crystallizing the desired compound in a highly concentrated inorganic acid. CONSTITUTION:1mol phenylphosphonothioic dichloride is reacted with 3-4mol nitric acid (preferably 30-60wt% concentration) in a solvent such as preferably benzene, etc. 40-75 deg.C for 1-5hr. After the reaction is over, the reaction solution is cooled, to crystallize the desired phenylphosphonic acid. EFFECT:The raw material is easily obtainable and inexpensive.
