PURPOSE:To manufacture a fiber reinforced Al alloy with high specific rigidity, high specific strength and superior heat resistance by uniformly mixing Al alloy powder with reinforcing staple fibers and by pressing the mixture at a temp. above the solidus line temp. of the Al alloy under hydrostatic pressure while applying ultrasonic vibration. CONSTITUTION:Al alloy powder is uniformly mixed with staple fibers of ceramics such as SiC, Al2O3 or Si3N4, and the mixture is charged into a capsular vessel made of mild steel. After evacuating and sealing the vessel, the mixture is pressed in a hot hydrostatic press at a temp. above the solidus line temp. of the Al alloy under 1,000kg/mm.<2> high hydrostatic pressure while applying ultrasonic vibration of 26kHz and 100W. A fiber reinforced Al alloy with superior strength and heat resistance is obtd.
