PURPOSE:To expand the dynamic range by constituting one picture element by at least the 1st and 2nd image pickup cell, giving a light sensitivity to the 2nd image pickup cell effectively lower than that of the 1st image pickup cell and mixing photo carriers stored in them so as to form a video signal of one picture element. CONSTITUTION:In irradiating incident light of the same luminous amount to two n<+> regions 14, 16 forming one picture element in the processing of a video signal, the carrier is stored in the region 16 in a speed of 1/10 in comparison with the speed of the region 14. For example, when light is incident to an image pickup cell 10 for a desired exposure time by means of an exposure means such as optical shutter, the light carrier is stored in the two n<+> regions 14, 16. The incident light 32 is shut by closing the shutter and the mode is transited to the stored carrier reading operation. Then, a potential of a gate electrode 26 is increased by applying a clock pulse to the gate electrode 26 between the n<+> regions 14 and 16 so as to bring the potential nearly equal to the potential of potential wells 114 and 116. Thus, the stored carrier in the two potential wells are mixed. |
