PURPOSE:To obtain a flame retardant polyester having improved heat resistance, curability and hue at a low cost, by using an addition reaction product mixture obtained from a halogenated bisphenol and an alkylene oxide under specific conditions for an esterification reaction without passing through a purification step, etc. CONSTITUTION:(A) An addition reaction product mixture obtained by reacting a phenolic compound consisting essentially of a bisphenol compound of the formula (X and Y are H, Cl or Br, provided that X and Y are not H at the same time; Z is 1-6C alkylene, SO or O; n is 0 or 1) with an alkylene oxide in an equivalent or more based on one equivalent phenolic OH in the above-mentioned phenolic compound in the presence of a glycol and an amine based compound at 50-180 deg.C is esterified with (B) a carboxylic acid component containing an alpha,beta- unsaturated dicarboxylic acid component, e.g. fumaric acid, as an essential component and if necessary (C) an alcoholic component.
