The invention relates to visual display devices with a memory using a nematic liquid crystal having a bending-divergence structure. The object of the invention is bring about a rotation PHI of the polarisation plane of the light 5 to the left or to the right for each image element of the device, this rotation being initiated by application of a continuous low-amplitude electric field and held on by an alternating electric field. The invention applies especially to visual display devices with matrix access. <IMAGE>
