The invention relates to the field of the petroleum industry. It relates to a process for improving heavy crudes by hydroconversion at high temperatures in the presence of inexpensive metal compounds which are soluble in the heavy crude and in water, as inhibitors of coke formation, the operation being followed by a deasphalting stage with a view to recovering the organometallic compounds and then recycling them to the hydroconversion stage. This process applies in particular to feedstocks with a high metal and asphaltene content, such as a heavy crude or its vacuum-distillation residue. <IMAGE>
