PURPOSE:To stabilize the titled compound useful as a raw material for synthesizing drugs, by adding a hydroxide, carbonate, or oxide of an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal to an alpha-acetyl-alpha-chloro-gamma-butyrolactone. CONSTITUTION:A hydroxide (e.g., KOH), carbonate (e.g., K2CO3), oxide (e.g., K2O) of an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal is added to an alpha-acetyl-alpha-chloro- gamma-butyrolacetone shown by the formula I so that the chlorolactone is stabilized. The chlorolactone shown by the formula I is industrially obtained by chlorinating alpha-acetyl-gamma-butyrolactone, but hydrogen chloride prepared as a by-product during chlorination is reacted with the chlorolactone or unreacted alpha-acetyl-gamma-butyrolactone so that lactone ring is subjected to cleavage to give compounds shown by the formula II and formula II, which cause coloring. Hydrogen chloride is consumed by the addition of the compound, so the chlorolactone is stabilized.
