A method and a device for reading and storing information is specified which consists of decodable written information and/or non- decodable graphic information and is arranged as optical contrast pattern on an original or the like. The original is scanned in a line-shaped dot raster and the video signal generated during this process is digitised. To be able to store, and process further, the information in as compressed a manner as possible, the digital video signal is checked, during each scanning process, in successive raster segments which are in each case offset by one or a number of raster lines and each contain a predetermined number of raster lines, for whether an evaluation criterion has been met which characterises the exclusive existence of written information. When the evaluation criterion is met, the information contained in this raster segment is decoded as lettering, when the criterion is not met, the next offset raster segment is evaluated and the raster lines no longer contained in the new raster segment are digitised as graphic information.
