PURPOSE:Optical thin films of specified composition are formed on the glass surfaces and the product is heated and rapidly cooled to form functional glass of high abrasion resistance. CONSTITUTION:The glass plate base 1 is coated with thin films of CeO2 21 and thin films of SiO2 22 alternately into multilayers by vacuum deposition. At this time, thin films of Al2O3 or ZrO2 23 are formed between both thin films 21, 22. The resultant glass plate is heated at 650-700 deg.C for about 15min, then rapidly cooled at a cooling rate over 100 deg.C/min by blowing cold air onto both surfaces. The above heat treatment diffuses the Al2O3 or ZrO2 between both layers into the CeO2 film and the SiO2 to form the diffusion layer 23. Further, the rapid cooling develops compression stress on the glass surfaces to increase the thermal and mechanical impact strength and abrasion strength of the glass surface by 3-5 times.
