PURPOSE:To prevent a blur of a thin line by making the thin line in the main scanning direction thick, so that a complicated character can be recorded with a high quality, by constituting so that beam diameters of the main and sub-scanning directions become a long shape for satisfying a specified condition. CONSTITUTION:In accordance with a picture information inputted to a driver, a modulation of a laser beam by an ultrasonic modulator is controlled, an electrostatic latent image is formed by a dot on a recording medium, and a recorded picture is obtained. A beam 1 emits a light of one dot portion by a clock signal of a constant time width tau, therefore, even in case a light of only one dot portion is emitted, the light is emitted by the sum of a beam spot diameter and the time width tau. When a beam diameter (a) of the main scanning direction and a beam diameter (b) of the sub-scanning direction are formed to a long shape for satisfying 1.0a<b<=2.0a, a width w' of a line in the main scanning direction can be made wider than before, a blur of a line which is apt to occur at the time of development can be prevented, and a complicated character can be recorded with a high quality.
