PURPOSE:To obtain an alcohol, by reducing an alpha,beta-unsaturated ketone with an inexpensive easily handleable boron hydride metal complex as a reducing agent in the presence of an inexpensive additive, e.g. a Lewis acid or organic acid, in a very small amount without isomerizing the double bond in the alpha,beta-unsaturated ketone. CONSTITUTION:A ketone compound of formula I (X is halogen, alkyl, cyano, alkoxyl, phenoxyl, phenyl or H; n is an integer 1-5; R is tert-butyl, alkyl, alkoxyl or phenyl) is reduced to give an alcoholic compound of formula II. In the process, a boron hydride metal complex, preferably sodium boron hydride is used as a reducing agent, and preferably 0.6-5mol% Lewis acid, preferably aluminum chloride or boron trifluoride, an organic acid, preferably trifluoroacetic acid, or trialkyl borate, preferably trimethyl borate is added to carry out the reaction.
