PURPOSE:To enable covering of optical fiber with metal resulting high strength and satisfactory adhesion and contg. no pinhole by forming a covering layer with a metal on optical fiber treated with primary coating utilizing decomposing effect of ultraviolet rays on an organometallic compd. CONSTITUTION:Optical fiber 10 having a primary coated layer and heated at a relatively low temp. through a heating furnace 4 is introduced into a reaction vessel 5 through an inserting hole 6. On one hand, feed gas of an organometallic compd. is fed to the vessel 5 through a feeding hole 8 by passing carrier H2 gas through an organometallic compd. (liq.) in a vessel provided in a thermostat 11. The external surface of the fiber 10 is irradiated with ultraviolet rays generated by a source 9 of the ultraviolet rays provided to the outside of the vessel 5, to form a covering layer with the metal on the primary coated layer. The optical fiber 10' provided with the metallic covering layer is delivered from the inserting hole 6'.
