Automatic control of strip rolling mill

Unstable lateral movement of metal strip passing through a rolling mill is controlled by detecting lateral displacement of the strip before it enters the work rolls. Roll gap control units change the gaps at each end of the rolls, in response to displacement signals, to compensate and prevent unstable lateral movement developing. Strip camber is detected by a lateral displacement sensor down-stream from the work rolls. This actuates a pair of vertical rolls bearing on the edges of the strip to control the camber.
