To produce a thin metal strip (4), a metal melt (3) is discharged from a melting vessel through a nozzle (1) onto a rotating cooling roll (2), the melt thus cooling rapidly and solidifying to form the thin metal strip. The discharge angle (r) between the direction of flow of the melt (3) emerging from the nozzle (1) and the tangent to the roll surface at the point at which the melt (3) comes into contact with the roll surface, the said angle being measured at the side remote from the production of the strip, is chosen in a range between 20 and 80 DEG . The fluctuation in the distance (6) between the nozzle (1) and the roll surface is no more than 50 <0>m. The surface speed of the roll (2) is between 10 and 50 m/s. The distance (6) between the nozzle (1) and the roll (2) is no more than 300 <0>m. Under these conditions, it is possible to produce thin metal strips (4) with a very smooth surface and a uniform thickness. <IMAGE>
