The fuel-consuming process for catalytic steam reforming of hydrocarbons comprises rreacting the major part of fluid hydrocarbons with steam in a first catalytic reformer, which is highly heated by contact with radiant heat and combustion gases, while the efflux comprises the first reformed gas mixture; reacting the remaining part of hydrocarbon feed with steam at a high temp. in a second catalytic reformer, while the efflux composes the second reformed gas mixt.; combining the two effluxes at the exit of the second reformer into one high-temp. effluc, while flowing it countercurrently through the outside up the second reformer to heat it; and discharging the partially condensed efflux from the second reformer.
