Method for transmitting a high-resolution television signal and for processing a television signal transmitted in this manner

To achieve compatibility of conventional television receivers with a high-resolution television system, a television signal obtained by progressive scanning is filtered vertically and in time at the transmitter end and each second line in the television signal thus formed (which corresponds to a television signal scanned with line interlays) is suppressed ("down-converted scanning"). The down-converted television signal can be received with a conventional television receiver and is transmitted on a first signal path. The frequency components suppressed in the vertical and time filtering ("complement signal") are shifted in their frequency and then transmitted on a second incompatible signal path. At the receiver end, the transmitter measures mentioned are cancelled during the processing of the signals received on both signal paths in order to obtain a signal which corresponds to the television signal obtained by progressive scanning.
