PURPOSE:To improve the S/N ratio of a reproduced signal, by specifying the transmissivity and reflectivity of the P-polarized light (or S-polarized light) of a beam splitter to be irradiated upon a photomagnetic recording medium vertically after S-polarized light (or P-polarized light) is reflected. CONSTITUTION:An S-polarized light (or P-polarized light) is irradiated upon a photomagnetic recording medium 3 almost vertically after it is reflected by a beam splitter 2 and a reflected light received Kerr rotation from the medium 3 is transmitted through the beam splitter 2, and then, the transmitted light is received by a detector 5 through an analyzer or polarization beam splitter 2. A beam splitter which has about 100% of transmissivity to P-polarized light (or S-polarized light) and about 33% of transmissivity and 67% of reflectivity to S- polarized light (or P-polarized light) is used for the beam splitter 2. When such beam splitter is used, the intensity of reproduced signals is improved by about 50% and the S/N ratio becomes higher proportionally when compared with a case where a beam splitter having about 50% of reflectivity and transmissivity to both P- and S-polarized lights is used. |
