PURPOSE:To reduce the number of parts by making switching operation of a coding system unnecessary by coding system designating data from the host system side. CONSTITUTION:If data transferred from the host system side to a printer interface circuit 56 exists, a printer control circuit 55 checks whether this input data is ''ESC'' data or not to discriminate whether it is coding system designating data or not. When the discrimination result indicates that input data is coding system designating data, namely, ''ESC'' data, the next input data is read out from the printer interface circuit 56, and the circuit 55 checks whether this input data is ''A'' data or not to discriminate whether the designated coding system is ANSCII code or not; and it is ANSCII code, the circuit 55 sets (selects) an ROM51. If it is not ANSCII code, the circuit 55 checks whether input data is ''B'' data or not to discriminate whether the designated coding system is JIS code or not; and if it is JIS code, the circuit sets an ROM52.
