PURPOSE:A safe antioxidant, containing a tannin fraction extracted from green tea leaves and Gambir (catechu) as an active constituent, having improved antioxidant action, and suitable for food and cosmetic (including quasi-drugs). CONSTITUTION:An antioxidant containing a tannin fraction extracted from green tea leaves and/or Gambir (catechu), usually consisting essentially of epicatechin (gallate) and/or epigallocatechin (gallate) as an active constituent. The above- mentioned antioxidant in an amount of usually 0.001-2wt%, preferably 1- 2wt%, preferably 1-2wt% expressed in terms of tannin fraction is added to a food, cosmetic, etc. The above-mentioned tannin fraction is obtained by extracting usual green tea leaves and/or Gambir (catechu) with a solvent, e.g. acetone/ water, ether or ethyl acetate, further extracting the resultant extract with a solvent or treating the resultant extract with a resin adsorbent, adsorbing the tannin fraction selectively thereon, and purifying the adsorbed fraction.
