NEW MATERIAL:The compound of formula I {A is single bind or bivalent 1- 10C aliphatic hydrocarbon group; R<1> is H or -COOR<11> [R<11> is H, 1-10C alkyl, tri(1-7C)hydrocarbon-silyl group or 1 equivalent of cation]; R<2> is (substituted) 1-10C aliphatic hydrocarbon group}. EXAMPLE:4-n-Butyl-5-(1-hydroxybutyl)-2-cyclopentenone. USE:A carcinostatic agent having excellent carcinostatic activity and antiviral activity, and relatively low physiological activity of prostaglandin. PREPARATION:The compound of formula I wherein R<1> is R<10> can be prepared, e.g. by reacting the 4-hydroxy-2-cyclopentenone derivative of formula II [R<3> is tri(1-7C)hydrocarbon-silyl, etc.] with the organic copper lithium compound of formula III [R<20>=R<2>; Q is halogen, phynylthio, etc.; p is 1-2], and reacting the reaction product with the aldehyde of formula IV [R<10> is H or -COOR<12> (R<12> is a group obtained by removing H from R<11>)].
