PURPOSE:To increase the efficiency of coal liquefaction reaction, by separating a coal liquefaction product into a fraction having a boiling point of 200-350 deg.C and a fraction having a boiling point of 350 deg.C or higher, hydrogenating the latter and mixing it with the former for use as solvent for coal liquefaction. CONSTITUTION:A coal slurry sent from a slurry-making process 1 is treated in a liquefaction process 2 and, after removal of residues (unreacted coal, ash, catalyst, etc.) in a solid/liquid separation process 3, the liquefaction product is separated into three fractions having boiling points of below 200 deg.C, 200-350 deg.C and above 350 deg.C respectively in a distillation process 4. At least a part of the fraction having a boiling point of above 350 deg.C is hydrogenated in a hydrogenation process 5 in the presence of an Fe catalyst. The oil obtained in the process 5 is mixed with at least a part of the fraction having a boiling point of 200- 350 deg.C and the mixture is sent to the slurry-making process 1 for use as solvent for coal liquefaction.
