PURPOSE:To make automatic inversion possible with an easy means by not only moving a head from a face A to a face B but also changing the scanning direction of a multiplexer so that the multiplexer functions in the same manner as the state, where the breadthwise direction of a tape is inverted for the head, when the tape running direction is inverted. CONSTITUTION:The output of a modulator 11 is distributed to N chennels of a multiplexer MPX 12 successively and is recorded onto N tracks of a tape 1 by recording heads 14-1-14-N. When the MPX 12 scans in the direction of an arrow S, the signal is recorded on each track in an area 4A of the tape as shown by Fig. A. When the tape is reversed to record signals, tracks are formed as shown by an area 4B. AT a reproducing time, the MPX 16 converts a reproduced signal to a serial signal and transmits it to an equalizer 17. Hereafter, signals are processed and reproduced successively. When the tape running direction is inverted, reproducing heads 14'-1-14'-N are slid to the area 4B shown in Fig A. Simultaneously, the scanning order of the MPX 16 is inverted as shown by an arrow S'', and serial data 1, 2-N are obtained in a correct order. |
