PURPOSE:To produce an oxyalkylated polyvinyl alcohol having a uniform composition and being desirable for use in molding materials, adhesives, coatings, etc., by saponifying a vinyl acetate/oxyalkylene group-containing monomer copolymer. CONSTITUTION:Vinyl acetate is copolymerized with a monomer containing an oxyalkylene group [e.g., (meth)allyl alcohol of the formula (wherein R is H or methyl, R<1> and R<2> are each H, alkyl, alkyl ester, alkylamide, or sulfonate, and n is 1-100)] in an alcohol solvent in the presence of a radical polymerization catalyst (e.g., azobisisobutyronitrile), and the produced copolymer is saponified at about 10-70 deg.C with an alkali catalyst such as sodium hydroxide. The proportion of the oxyalkylene group-containing monomer in the copolymer is preferably about 0.01-50mol%, and the degree of saponification is preferably about 10-100mol%.
