The invention relates to a reference electrode having an outer housing which contains a half-cell electrolyte and which can be connected via a liquid bridge to a test substance, and having an inner housing which contains a reference electrolyte in its electrolyte space and is connected with the inner space of the outer housing via a liquid bridge, a half-cell electrode in contact with the reference electrolyte and outwardly screened mechanically being fed into the inner housing. In order to virtually prevent ion migration in or out of the reference electrolyte, a cartridge containing an anion-cation exchanger is arranged upstream of the electrolyte space, the anion-cation exchanger being completely saturated with the anions and cations of the reference electrolyte.
