A serial printer comprises a carriage (10) loaded with a printing head (14) which is movable in the horizontal direction. A motor is contained in the carriage to drive a pinion (30) attached to a rotor shaft (26) of the motor. This pinion (30) engages a rack (22) attached to a guide rail (20) for movably supporting the carriage (10). The carriage (10) loaded with the printing head (14) is moved along the rack by rotating the pinion (30) engaged with the rack (22) by operation of the motor.
