Figure 3 shows the cross-section of a flat rule 1 on the centre part 2 of which scale plates denoted by 4 are integrally formed on both sides. In this arrangement, the underside 2 of the centre part 2 projects with respect to the undersides 11 of the scale plates 4 in such a way as to leave an interspace 15 free in each case between a bearing surface 14 and the undersides 11 of the two scale plates 4. Furthermore, rule scales (not specially represented) of a different type are mounted both on the top sides 9 and on the undersides 11 of the two scale plates. <IMAGE>
