In order to provide a head rest which is not only simple to produce, attach and handle but furthermore ensures a highly impact-absorbing effect by means of elastic deformation, it is proposed according to the invention that a horizontally arranged tension spring (7) should be located in the upholstery element (1), the ends of which spring are attached to a holder (5). The tension spring (7) is provided approximately in the central region of the upholstery element (1) and is surrounded by an elastic sheath (8).
