In order to locate leaks from a tubular heat exchanger having a bundle of tubes, the background noise which prevails at the exit of the tubes 14 is first measured. The sound level coming from each tube is in turn then compared with the background noise, after having set the space which surrounds the tubes at a pressure which is markedly different from the internal pressure of the tubes. A microphone probe may be used for this purpose, which can be moved by hand in front of the tubes and/or can be inserted into the tubes. <IMAGE>
