In sewing machines having an oscillating barrel shuttle (16), loose stitches can occur when zigzag stitches are being sewn because, particularly during slow sewing, the front leg (24) of the over-thread loop pushes against the under-thread (29). A spring (10) or a cushion (14) having bristles (15) which are fastened to the driver (1) and which bear on the shuttle back (21) brake the rear leg (27) of the over-thread loop and temporarily retain this, thereby preventing the formation of a loose stitch. <IMAGE>
