<p>Further-polymerizable methylol-phosphorus polymers may be insolubilized by reacting them with ammonia. Methylol-phosphorus polymers are defined as being compounds obtainable by reacting tetrakis(hydroxymethyl) phosponium salts, e.g. chloride (THPC), tris(hydroxymethyl) phosphine oxide (THPO), and/or phosphoruslinked methylol group-containing reaction products thereof, with compounds containing a plurality of groups which are capable of condensing with formaldehyde or of esterifying methanol. The ammonia may be in the form of a gas, NH4OH, a solution in an inert solvent (e.g. H2O), or weak acid salts, e.g. ammonium acetate or carbonate. Compounds with which one or more of the THP compounds may be reacted include one or more of the following: melamine, guanidine or urea, or methylol compounds thereof, hexamethylene pentamine, cetylamine, cyclohexylamine, aniline, diethanolamine poly(hexamethyleneadipamide), (poly)ethyleneimine, proteins, phenol, naphthol and phloroglucinol. The reaction with ammonia preferably takes place at room temperature and may be performed in situ in the interstices and/or on the surface of fibrous materials (especially cellulosic materials such as cotton textiles or wood) preferably by impregnating the material with an aqueous solution of the methylol-phosphorus polymer, drying and then impregnating with ammonia, thus producing a flame-proofing effect (see Group VIII). The aqueous solutions of the polymers used in Examples (4) and (7) may also contain stearamido sulpho-succinates, stearyl dimethyl benzyl ammonium chloride, isopropanol, and an ethylene oxide/nonyl phenol reaction product. In examples THPC is reacted with (1) trimethylolmelamine, (3) phloroglucinol, (4) urea, and first urea, later melamine, and (7) first urea, and later partially methylated trimethylolmelamine. It is stated that the methylol phosphorus polymers may be derived from proteins by reaction with various hydroxymethyl phosphorus compounds.
