A lathe comprises a carriage 5 carrying a cross-slide 15 and a rotatable part 19 carrying the tool 22, there being one or more intermediate slides 9 having guiding surfaces on their upper and lower sides, each slide being shorter than the guide on which it moves. The slides form a pyramid structure as illustrated in Fig. 1 (not shown) which can be of pyramid form also in the plane of Fig. 2 (not shown). Intermediate slides may contain change-speed gearing so that slides may be fed at different speeds in different directions to give a. fine feed speed. |
